SPEAKING UP FOR THE POLAR REGIONS AT RIO+20

Sponsored by the McGill Journal of International Sustainable Development Law and Policy
Interested in sustainable development law, the Polar Regions and Rio+20?

LOCATION: NCHD 203, McGill Faculty of Law
DATE & TIME: Thursday April 12th, 12:00-1:00

‘Speaking Up for the Polar Regions’ is a presentation that draws much needed attention to the emerging challenge of sustainable development in the Arctic and Antarctica. In the lead up to Rio+20, a UN conference aiming to secure renewed political commitment to sustainable development, the Polar Regions have been the subject of shockingly little discussion.

The presentation will discuss sustainable development challenges the Polar Regions face and how Rio+20 can help address them.

Speaking at this event is Jessica Magonet, the Policy Director of the Students on Ice Alumni Delegation (www.soidelegation.com). This international delegation is comprised of youth under 24 who have visited the Polar Regions and are committed to their protection. The delegation will travel to the Rio+20 conference to advocate for sustainable development in Arctic and Antarctica.

Jessica is a first year student at McGill Law and an incoming Executive Editor of the McGill Journal of International Sustainable Development Law and Policy. She traveled to the Arctic in 2010.
